Last week I posted about a day in the life of a merchandise assistant. Since that only showed one day, I thought I would give an even fuller picture by sharing every single team I or other merchants on my team work with. Since I am just a merchandise assistant I don’t always communicate directly with some of these teams, but if you are on a merchandising team it is likely you will have to collaborate with all of these teams at some point.
Planning- This is the team that will provide direction on how much money a merchant has to spend on their buys. They also predict different sales metrics the merchandising team strives to meet. There are also some specialized positions within the planning part of the company that helps merchants figure out how many items they should bring in to help them not be over or under inventoried.
Allocation- This team figures at how to disperse the correct amount and type of product to each store to maximize sales.
Pricing- When working for a big company there is often a general pricing strategy that each merchandising team will have to find a way to work with.
Visual Merchandising- This team creates a strategy for the store environment. They figure out how all the product will be laid out.
Marketing- This team creates content that the company directly sends out to promote product. This includes mailers, TV commercials, social media, and radio.
Public Relations- PR is separate from marketing because they work on getting the company’s product to be featured in different magazines and influencer content.
Styling- This team puts together the outfits featured in commercials and print.
Supply Chain- When product is shipped from the factories then to the warehouses and then to the stores, this team helps make that process function efficiently and at a low cost.
Merchandise Operations- This team gets all of the data for each individual product correctly inputted to our systems.
Product Development/Technical Design- I don’t personally work with these teams because I purely work with vendors who take care of that step of the process. However, most merchandising teams with work with said teams. PD and Tech design are involved with how an actual garment is created.
As you can see, a merchant works with a variety of teams to get their vision to the customer. This is why people so often say that everyday is different when working in fashion/retail.
